ABOUT US
We are a group of Washington, DC area residents who organized in 2009 to oppose the National Park Service's (NPS) plan to kill native deer in Rock Creek National Park in Washington, DC for the first time since the park's founding in 1890. We were appalled by the bias, distortion and inaccuracy outlined in the National Park Service's White-tailed Deer Management Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Statement We began to educate ourselves and others on the various issues and submitted comments on the various issues and submitted comments on the plan.
After the NPS published its final decision some of us joined with the non-profit international group In Defense of Animals to sue the NPS to prevent its extreme and unjustified “killing solution” for deer. Through the Washington DC law firm of Meyer, Glitzenstein, and Crystal we filed the opening brief in January 2013, an appeal in May 2013 . and a legal petition in August 2013. We also developed an online petition with over 16,00 signatures worldwide, started a facebook page, organized rallies, and obtained extensive media publicity. Our appeal was turned down, primarily because of the Court's perceived obligation to defer to the federal agency on both facts and law.
Through this website, we want connect to a wider audience in order to share scientifically based information about effective and humane approaches and other issues bearing on the plan. Much of our information applies to other urban areas as well as Rock Creek Park.
